Sustainability is a significant challenge for the industry, and there are a number of solutions and practices to consider to address this business and social imperative. As the industry looks to the future, airlines and OEMs might be considering innovative ways to address sustainability such as fuel-saving fuselage design, SAF and new fuel sources such as hydrogen, as well as decarbonization and elimination of emissions at the source. Circular economy is also becoming a critical component of strategies for sustainability. It can bring significant value to the industry and, more importantly, it can be implemented today. 

A unique platform to accelerate circular economy practices

The aviation industry is implementing strategies to become more sustainable. One piece of a sustainability strategy is retiring aircraft at the end of their lifecycle. Many components are being discarded, mainly due to the significant challenge in parts traceability, as some aircraft are simply abandoned as waste in airline boneyards. To help resolve this dilemma, Capgemini and partner AWS have developed a unique platform, Lifecycle Optimization for Aerospace, designed to accelerate the adoption of circular economy practices in the aviation industry. This is achieved by automating the inspection process and optimizing the lifecycle analysis of aircraft parts, and guiding decisions to extend their lifespan.

How we can improve aircraft lifespan

Launched at the Paris Air Show in June 2023, the platform provides a comprehensive view and understanding of the usage of parts over time, through the collection and analysis of in-service operations data. Securing the collection of historical information will increase the potential re-use of each part of an aircraft and help the aerospace ecosystem – owners, operators, and OEMs – to collaborate and improve worldwide utilization of existing products.

Capgemini and AWS announce the launch of a technology platform to improve the lifespan of aircraft parts.

Collaboration at the heart

It is more important than ever that collaboration is at the heart of aerospace and aviation initiatives, innovations and technology solutions – involving the broader industry ecosystem.

Our platform’s database represents a valuable digital asset on which Capgemini builds services to optimize maintenance approaches and use of existing parts, and has been developed with the cooperation of our partner companies.

Several major players in the aviation sector, including Air France and Safran, participated in its development and will be amongst the first users of the platform. 

Developed in partnership with AWS

The platform, developed by Capgemini and built on AWS’s Cloud, consolidates historical operation data and reconstructs a complete traceability of all the constituent parts of an aircraft.  

It has already demonstrated its ability to optimize the inspection phases and ongoing development of complementary services, and our ambition is to provide a decision-making tool for users at the various stages of the sustainability value chain.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning (NLP) services have been specifically developed and trained on data models, based on the ASD  standards.

Matthieu Ritter

Matthieu has a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical engineering from ENSPIMA, Bordeaux Institute of Technology (INP) and more than 15 years of experience in the A&D industry where he works with clients on integrated solutions from engineering to aircraft maintenance, modification, and end of life management. Matthieu joined Capgemini in 2018 and has since been supporting A&D clients in the convergence of the physical, digital, and human worlds to accelerate the transformation of products, services, systems, and operations with the ultimate goal of creating more value for customers.
